Welcome to bode. My name is Boyd Johansen and these are my designs. I want to show you just the beginning of my time as an Industrial Designer. I graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado with a B.A. in Industrial Design. In December of 2012 I made the move to Germany to be with my wife and start a career.
I really enjoy working with my hands as well as the sketching, rendering, research and knowledge of the hard work that goes into things. The best feeling for me is when I can see the outcome of a project that was in my head only weeks before and it has now materialized. Wood and metal working is becoming a passion of mine as I tend to merge the two together, but on the other end, I love the difficulty of working with soft goods. Along with these aspects, I am always open to exploring new materials and methods to incorporate into design.
As I have time, I am focusing on furniture design and fabrication and will continue to upload projects as they are completed. Currently I am designing and fabricating pieces for the kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Stop back by and I may have something else uploaded. Thanks for looking.
Below are a few of my projects that I have decided to pick out to explain a little bit more about. You can also see more of these projects on the process page.
A snap-shot shows the edge grain of walnut veneer plywood that was incorporated in the construction of a chair I like to call "Spring Back." Based on other components Spring Back gives you the relaxation of a rocking chair and is able to assist you when you are ready to get up.
Dubbed as the "Awesome Table," I have utilized 5 different woods to complete the table top and give it a natural, elegant look. Steel was bent to construct the frame that the top "floats" in. There is no hardware holding the top, just gravity.
As a grad project, I spent a year researching and developing military equipment. More specifically, a plate carrier that would bring unused technology into attaching pouches and the ease in which it takes to don and bear a fully loaded ballistic vest. The outcome was a system in which allows the user to change pouches in a matter of seconds instead of minutes, and with a few turns of a knob can tighten down the vest to a comfortable feel.
A big project that I received was from the Governor's Mansion in Denver, Colorado. I was selected from a group of people to design and fabricate sign stands for way-finding signage that will soon be visible around the Governor's Residence.
